Job description

SUMMARY The Brown University Health (BUH) Senior Physician Liaison is responsible for developing and executing outreach plans targeted to the referring physician community across Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Outreach goals include increasing referrals to the system through promotion of key clinical programs, sharing information about new physicians, communicating program updates, and supporting the expansion of clinical services. The Senior Physician Liaison reports to the Vice President, Business Development and, as needed, to the Executive Vice President for Ambulatory Services.

The Senior Physician Liaison collaborates closely with BUH colleagues to assess concerns raised by referring physicians and their staff, identify potential process breakdowns, and work with internal teams to develop solutions and drive improvements. This role requires significant field presence, with approximately 40-50% of time spent meeting with practices and promoting BUH clinical programs and services. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Brown University Health employees are expected to successfully role model the organization's values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence as these guide our everyday actions with patients, customers, and one another.

Outreach & Relationship Development Conduct regular outreach visits to referring physician practices throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Build and maintain a consistent cadence of touchpoints with physicians, advanced practice providers, and office staff to strengthen referral relationships and address emerging needs. Represent and promote key Centers of Excellence and priority programs for Brown University Health.

The Senior Physician Liaison will function as the on-the-ground presence for Brown University Health and is responsible for escalating issues as necessary and appropriate. Identify barriers to referral flow and collaborate with internal stakeholders to resolve issues. This work should lead to increased provider referrals to BUH.

Activity Tracking & Reporting Document monthly outreach activities, including practice visits, follow-up actions, referral trends, and identified opportunities. Prepare and distribute a Monthly Activity Report to senior leadership summarizing progress, themes, and strategic recommendations. Marketing Collaboration & Community Engagement Partner with the Brown Health marketing and communications team to develop effective marketing collateral for outreach visits and regularly assess opportunities to refine messaging to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with BUH priorities.

Serve as a consistent point of contact for key personnel within community practices, enabling regular feedback and early identification of issues. Partner with marketing and communications teams to develop outreach-ready collateral and ensure consistent messaging. Meet with new faculty to introduce the Physician Liaison program, provide education on outreach processes, and identify community engagement needs.

Strategic Program Support Support the launch and promotion of new clinical programs, services, and providers through targeted outreach strategies. Gather field intelligence to inform strategic planning, market positioning, and competitive analysis. Serve as a resource for referring practices, ensuring they have access to scheduling pathways, referral guidelines, and program updates.

Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION Bachelor's degree required. Master's in health care or Master of Business Administration preferred.

EXPERIENCE Seven to ten years of progressively responsible project management experience with at least two years being in health care organizations. Clinical experience preferred but not required. Must be extremely mature and have excellent judgment since he or she will be working independently and will often be the face of Brown University Health in the community.

Must have excellent communication and follow-through skills and demonstrate enthusiasm for customer service and relations. Must be able to recognize an acute problem (e.g., need for an immediate outpatient referral) and know how to work effectively in a large organization to get a timely solution. Must be highly skillful in involving and collaborating with physicians, including our Department Chiefs, and allied health staff on program development and execution and be a good team player

Must understand how to work effectively within a large complex AMC. Must enjoy a flexible schedule, to accommodate evening and occasional weekend programs. Must have a car and valid driver's license, as this position requires frequent travel within Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED Excellent communication and critical thinking skills. Exceptional organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple ongoing projects. Excellent client management, project management, time management skills.

Must be able to work effectively with cross-functional groups and participate in the problem-solving process with senior leadership. Self-motivated with strong initiative to learn. Demonstrated knowledge of business planning methods, marketing concepts, research, and data collection processes, as well as strong project management skills.

Experience with assessing the viability, stability, and profitability of a business, program, or project through calculations and projections to provide direction regarding actions or alternatives. Solid understanding of financial and budget analysis requires software proficiency skills. Strong Microsoft Office (w/advanced Excel skills) required.

Expert understanding of health systems and operations. Strong information technology skills and ability to use technology solutions to improve the relationship management process. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.

Initiative-taking, exceptional integrity, and ability to develop a common vision among a variety of constituents. Strong marketing and promotion skills. Ability to use tact, discretion, and always maintain confidentiality.
