BerryDunn is working with our client, NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire, to locate a mission driven professional to head up their Finance Department.

For more than 33 years, NeighborWorks has been a driving force in strengthening New Hampshire communities - expanding access to quality housing, revitalizing neighborhoods, and empowering hardworking individuals and families to build stable, thriving futures.  What began as a focused community initiative has grown into a regional organization serving 81 communities from New Hampshire's southern border to the Lakes Region. Today, we manage more than 500 affordable rental apartments and continue to grow our portfolio, while delivering homeownership and financial wellness education and counseling that help to create new homeowners and more financially stable households.

This is an opportunity for a Director of Finance who is energized by both purpose and performance - someone who wants to play a strategic leadership role in a growing organization where financial stewardship directly advances community transformation.  As a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for the financial management, integrity, and sustainability of the organization, this role oversees accounting, budgeting, compliance, reporting, and financial planning while serving as a key thought partner to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as the organization's senior financial leader and advisor to the Executive Director and Board.
  • Develop long-term financial strategies that support program growth and sustainability.
  • Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Provide financial analysis to support strategic decisions, new initiatives, and funding opportunities.

Accounting & Financial Management

  • Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Ensure proper internal controls, financial policies, and procedures.
  • Manage cash flow and reserves planning.
  • Oversight of mortgage loan portfolio

Grant & Contract Compliance

  • Oversee financial management of government grants, housing contracts, and foundation/corporate and other funding.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local funding requirements (including cost allocations where applicable).
  • Prepare financial reports for funders.
  • Support program staff in budget development for grant proposals.

Audit & Compliance

  • Coordinate annual independent audit and IRS Form 990 preparation.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP).
  • Maintain compliance with housing-related regulatory requirements, as applicable.
  • Serve as primary liaison with auditors and external financial consultants.

Board & Committee Support

  • Present financial reports and analysis to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
  • Support board financial literacy and transparency.
  • Assist with risk management and policy development.

Team & Operations Support

  • Supervise finance staff or outsourced accounting partners.
  • Support cross-functional collaboration with program and development teams.
  • Contribute to organizational planning and culture-building efforts.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field with 5-10 years of progressive financial management experience in nonprofit accounting.
  • Experience with housing programs, real estate, community development, or government funding is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial compliance for grants and contracts.
  • Ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable insights.
  • High level of integrity and commitment to mission-driven work.

Compensation Details

The base salary range targeted for this role is $100,000 - $120,000. This salary range represents a good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. If an applicant possesses experience, education, or other qualifications more than the minimum requirements for this posting, that applicant is encouraged to apply, and a final salary range may then be based on those additional qualifications; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, years of experience, depth of experience, seniority, merit, education, training, amount of travel, and other relevant business considerations.
