As of Jun 22, 2026, the average hourly pay for hospitalists in the United States is $136.14, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $120.19 and $158.65 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How do hospitalists typically coordinate care with other medical professionals during a patient's hospital stay?

Hospitalists play a central role in managing and coordinating patient care during hospitalization. They work closely with a variety of healthcare professionals, including nurses, specialists, primary care physicians, and case managers, to ensure comprehensive and continuous care. Daily rounds often involve collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to discuss patient progress, update treatment plans, and address any changes in condition. Effective communication and documentation are essential, as hospitalists frequently serve as the primary point of contact for both patients and the broader care team.

Where do hospitalists make the most money?

Hospitalists tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for healthcare services, such as urban areas or states with a shortage of physicians. Factors like experience, hospital type, and additional certifications can also influence compensation levels.

What are hospitalists?

Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the care of patients while they are in the hospital. Unlike primary care doctors who see patients in clinics or offices, hospitalists work exclusively in a hospital setting and manage all aspects of a patient's care during their stay. They coordinate with other specialists, monitor patient progress, and are available to address any urgent issues that arise. This specialization helps ensure that hospitalized patients receive continuous and focused medical attention throughout their stay.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hospitalist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hospitalist, you need comprehensive medical knowledge, strong diagnostic abilities, and an MD or DO degree with board certification in internal medicine or family medicine. Familiarity with hospital information systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and clinical decision support tools is crucial. Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership skills help Hospitalists coordinate care among multidisciplinary teams and interact effectively with patients and families. These competencies ensure efficient patient management, promote safety, and contribute to positive health outcomes in complex hospital environments.

Their roles are distinct but complementary within hospital care.

Can you make good money as a hospitalist?

Hospitalists typically earn competitive salaries, with median annual pay often ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 depending on experience, location, and work setting. Many hospitalists also receive benefits such as bonuses, overtime pay, and flexible schedules, which can increase overall compensation.

What kind of job is a hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a medical doctor who specializes in providing inpatient care to hospitalized patients. They coordinate treatment, perform rounds, and communicate with specialists and patients, often working in hospital settings with shift-based schedules. Hospitalists typically have completed residency in internal medicine or family medicine and may use electronic health records to manage patient information.

Are hospitalists in high demand?

Hospitalists are in high demand due to the increasing need for inpatient care and hospital-based physicians. They typically work in hospital settings, often with shift-based schedules, and their demand is expected to grow as healthcare systems expand and focus on efficient patient management.
