Fall 2026 Food Sustainability Intern Job Description

3 hours - Waste Not 2.0 Analysis - NYU (Overproduction focus)

3 hours - Streamline Analysis and monitoring

2 hours - Greener by Default Compliance - Reviewing weekly menus for compliance

3 hours - Reviewing catering recovery program

Looking for someone who is passionate about reducing waste in dining halls and strong interest in analyzing food-related data.

Responsibilities

Conduct site visits and gather data to assess and monitor sustainability performance with our internal waste management software

Reviewing our weekly menu cycle for compliance to Chartwells' standards

Uphold the company's values and commitment to creating a better world through sustainable practices

Learning Objectives:

Gain real-world experience in sustainability analytics within campus dining operations

Apply waste reduction strategies using data-driven insights

Understand operational compliance related to sustainability standards

Conduct site visits to observe and evaluate dining operations firsthand

Monitor and interpret waste management data to identify trends

Analyze food overproduction to uncover opportunities for reduction

Evaluate sustainability performance across dining locations

Develop skills in identifying process improvements through data analysis

Assess weekly menus for compliance with sustainability guidelines

Support evaluation of food recovery and catering recovery programs

Integrate data analysis with practical sustainability initiatives

Build understanding of how dining operations can reduce waste and improve efficiency

Gain insight into advancing environmental goals within food service operations

This is a paid intern position; however, it is not eligible for paid time off (PTO) or benefits such as medical, dental, vision, etc.

Because this position requires you to perform services in an educational facility, there may be periods when the Company does not require you to perform work (such as winter and summer breaks when food service needs decline or cease). Any such periods during which you do not perform work on the Company's behalf may be unpaid and deemed a temporary layoff. However, depending on business needs, you may be required to work year-round, potentially at a different location during break periods.  Business needs may vary from year to year.
